”Among Shadows”
Emily Shedlock

My practice is an ongoing exploration of shadow work, a therapeutic process that exposes the parts of ourselves that we suppress in order to confront them and strive towards true self-acceptance.

I create narrative-driven portraits where my subjects coexist with shadows and silhouettes that serve as representatives of the emotions, fears, traumas and desires that we keep hidden, also known as our “shadow selves”. Various symbolic objects are also incorporated into each scene, acting as allegories for the threats against those of us who are in positions of vulnerability in today’s world. My own silhouette is featured in each scene to express solidarity and offer protection from these said threats.

When standing in front of my work, I challenge the audience to claim the shadows as their own to view my sitter in a more empathetic light and to take a moment to confront their own fragility. I hope to build a new realm to explore one’s self without the fear of scrutiny and shame and where we can escape to practice radical empathy and collective healing.

Flesh Flowers explores the tumultuous relationship that many women experience with their bodies in today’s beauty-obsessed culture. Surfaces inspired by Victorian decor highlight the parallels between the constraints faced by women historically and those prevalent today.

Distorted feminine forms illustrate the restriction and contortion of our bodies needed to achieve impossible beauty standards and prompts us to consider our expectations of femininity, their origins, and their effects.
