“Escape”
Carla Munsat

I’ve been very fortunate to have the opportunity to work in my studio during the time of Covid—an escape from the rest of the world. During this time, I found my reality changing constantly with my exploration of new imagery.

Dreams and literature play a significant role in my new work. Many of the works employ both collage and paint, beginning with a range of ideas which I explore as the images progress. I’ve always enjoyed working with mixed media and recently shifted from oil to acrylic. Integrating both the real and the imaginary is very exciting to me. Thus I find that sharing my ideas with the viewer but keeping something hidden gives me great satisfaction.

I am captivated by natural materials and use them in my artistic works - carving roots, using dead plants collected from my garden and photographing molds. As I work, I transform the natural materials into something new that also feels organic. For this body of work, I discovered the plant fibers of kozo, flax and reed. I learned to turn the kozo bark into a beautiful laciness, turn the sensuous flax into sculptural forms and add reed as dimensional line. Adding found plant material, I combine the fibers until they resonate with me, creating fanciful wall sculptures that abstractly reference the world around me. I embrace nature, letting its beauty guide my work.
