“Holding On: Collages for Current Times”

We are living in a time of overwhelm. There is a sense of being carried away as if in a flood. It’s too much. It is like a great test. I am trying to hold it together. In these collages I am combining what is off kilter, fragmented and imbalanced with color, shape and relationship. I see art-making as a pipeline to optimistic prayer.

Susan Morrison-Dyke: “Modern Artifacts”

My paintings are constructed with figurative, architectural and cultural elements. Finding my inspiration in the sleek abstraction of mid-century modern design, the inventiveness of cubism and the authenticity of primitive and ancient art, I rely on intuition and spontaneity to guide my artistic process.

This series of new paintings has a slight reliance on the vernacular, intuitive sentiments of iconic Americana and cultural familiarities (high and low).

During the long pandemic lockdown, my yearning for a national solidarity and identity morphed into a wistfulness of long forgotten places and past experiences when innocence and naivety coexisted. Recollected impressions from popular gameboards, boardwalks, boat launches, beaches and amusement parks have served as a means for my creative pursuits in this series of paintings.
