Jarrett Min Davis:
Surveying the Land
Davis' work deals with the bewilderment and uncertainty of identity. The figures are integrated from multiple Asian pop sources. Accompanied by bird imagery, these Asian icons inhabit a psychological landscape that is a mixture of Korean architecture, bombed-out Western ruins, and Flemish-style painting. It reflects the artist's Korean-American duality.
Jarrett Min Davis was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted by American parents. His MFA is from the Maryland Institute College of Art and Design, and he is currently on the faculty of the Massachusetts College of Art. He has shown work in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City.
A Story of Rose's
Subitled "A Narrative from the Life of Holocaust Survivor Rosette Volk," this biographical account of the artist's mother uses inkjet prints to weave together her writing, documents and photographs. While it is not a complete history, “A Story of Rose's” touches on a number of points in time and significant events that shaped and changed his mother's identity. Volks says, "Sharing my mother's experience during the Holocaust is an act of remembrance. My hope is that the complexity of my mother's story also allows the viewer to reflect on fragmentation, on loss, on adaptation, and on rebuilding."
Larry Volk has taught in the New England region for 18 years. He is currently an assistant professor of photography at Endicott College and holds an MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has exhibited regionally and nationally, most recently in 2009 at the Boston University Florence & Chafetz Hillel House. His work is held in both private and museum collections that include the Danforth Museum and the University of Virginia Museum of Art.
